When it comes to online gaming, there are two main buzzwords used to differentiate styles of games: MMORPG and MMO. To the uninitiated there may not seem to be much of a difference, however understanding the difference can make all the difference when it comes to deciding which game you want to download and play.
So, start with the basics. First, MMO stands for Massively Multi-player On line. This is a game that allows multiple people to play a game online together, most often in a cooperative manner, in an attempt to accomplish a singular, common goal.
MMORPG stands for Massively Multi-player On line Role Playing Game. MMORPGs allow thousands if not hundreds of thousands of people to get on line and play the same game on line in a cooperative setting, just like an MMO, however there is one major difference: game setting. It adds a layer of depth by asking players to assume the identity of characters in the game and put themselves directly in the action in the fictional setting. MMO games do not necessarily have this additional layer, meaning that players take a more passive role while they play. They are still invested in the action, but just not as in depth.
MMOs allow players to get involved in the action through the use of an avatar, or representation of themselves as a character in the game. The player guides the character through the on line world and advances them through various game levels etc, gaining a variation of currency that allows you to more customize your avatar. The fictional setting is usually designed to resemble a real place and uses made up names to reference what may be familiar sites and elements in the world such as cars, stores, etc.
MMORPG online games, on the other hand, like Street Mobster and other free MMORPG games, allow players the ability create their own characters, which are then used to fight the enemy and advance the storyline. You take on an entry level position when you start the game and then advance your way through the ranks by participating in various tasks. You can choose to fight other players or create teams to work your way up the ranks. In most cases, MMORPGs are set in a more fictionalized setting rather in a real life place.
In both types of games, players can take advantage of chat boards or can be connected to audio via gaming headphones that allow players to communicate between themselves. In most cases, players have to set up a network inside the gaming platform in order to be able to communicate with each other, though some games allow for free communication between players without accepting them as friends. Also, in order to be considered an MMO or either type, you should expect to have to download something in order to play. Otherwise, it’s just considered an on line community.
The main thing to remember is that there are more types of MMO games than just RPGs or role playing games. There are also simulation games, puzzle games, real time strategy games and more. MMORPGs are just a sub genre of MMO games.
