‘I would rather die than marry that woman.’ –this is probably what 33-year-old Kang Hu thought as he tried to drown himself after seeing his bride-to-be for the first time. Apparently, the couple were arranged to be wed but he never saw the girl until their wedding day. What came as a shock to him, came as a surprise to the wedding guests as he told the bride-to-be that she was ‘too ugly’ for him and marrying her would destroy his image.
“It was a very awkward moment for everyone. The bride was devastated, her family were furious, his family were furious, and we his friends were embarrassed. Kang has very exact tastes and had been forced into this marriage,” wedding guest Pal Chan Wang exclaimed.
30-year-old Na Jung felt embarrassed as she was left alone at the altar while her groom-to-be was seen wandering around a nearby river. What happened next was unexpected.
According to other witnesses, they saw him circling around a nearby river a few moments after he left the wedding ceremony. His intention? To drown himself! He wanted to commit suicide instead of marrying his bride-to-be.
Qan Tsui, 25, who took photos of the rescue, said: “He was fully clothed and floating face down in the water.
“He was unconscious and I thought he was dead. When the police arrived one jumped in and dragged him ashore with the help of foremen who put a rope around his chest to pull him out before pumping his chest. They saved his life,” 25-year-old Qan Tsui told reporters. Qan Tsui took photos of Kang Hu while he was being rescued from the waters.
Kang was rushed to hospital where doctors said he was in a stable condition. “I feel bad about what happened but when I saw her she wasn’t what I had expected and I realized she would be bad for my image. My parents had arranged this and I couldn’t see any way out apart from suicide,” Kang explained as soon as he regained consciousness.
